Ride from Lake County Old School Forest Preserve to Independence Grove Forest Preserve along Des Plaines River
Meet at Old School Forest Preserve
28285 N St Marys Road
Libertyville, IL 60048
Off St Marys Road between Rt 60 and Rt 176
Meet at 10:00 am, biking starts 10:30 am
Meet at parking lot labeled “Shelters A and B”. This is the first parking lot off the one-way Forest Preserve loop Road (a right turn). The bike trail is located at the far side of the parking lot opposite the parking lot entrance. Use Google Earth for clear picture of Shelters A and B.
We will ride north to Independence Grove Forest Preserve along the Des Plaines River Trail and will return to Old School Forest Preserve via the same trail. Most of the trail is either packed cinders and/or packed earthen. Ample bathrooms are available at both Old School and Independence Grove Forest Preserves.
This is approximately an 8-mile round trip between the two forest preserves. Those wishing to ride a little farther can take the 2.5-mile loop around the 115 acre lake complex at Independence Grove.
Most of the bike path is along the Des Plaines River, so if it's flooded we will probably do a shorter alternative route around the perimeter of Old School Preserve.
Depending on the COVID situation, vaccination status and weather, we will have lunch at one of the brew pubs in downtown Libertyville (Mickey Finn's or O'Toole's) following the bike ride. Libertyville is approximately 2.5 miles from Old School Forest Preserve. Both Mickey Finn's and O'Toole's have outdoor/tent seating areas.
