Social Distancing Deer Grove Forest Preserve Hike
On October 3, 2020, Joan Strzelecki led a hike through the prairie trail at Deer Grove Forest Preserve, followed by lunch at Brandt’s of Palatine. During the hike, Peggy Simonsen explained how the Cook County Forest Preserve District was able to bring back the prairie that existed centuries ago. The weather had cooled off a bit on the day of the hike, which made it comfortable for wearing our face masks outdoors. It probably also explained why it was easy to get three tables on the patio for the twelve of us.
Chicagoland Club 50 Facebook Page
Joe Strzelecki volunteered to give Club 50 a Facebook presence ̶ a private page for all of us with a Facebook account to post photos and comments and also a public page to advertise Club 50 to those over 50 years of age looking for an active sports life. Joe has volunteered to be the administrator of both.

Backyards for Ten
Following CDC and State of Illinois guidelines, Club 50 started our in-person activity season with backyard gatherings for no more than ten people. Jo Day and George Giesey, Peggy Simonsen and Adrienne Woodside provided the deck chairs and safe snacks. Adrienne’s dog, Louise, provided the comedy, jumping on the table of carefully prepared chicken satay with peanut sauce and shrimp on a stick, sampling everything, but she passed up the deviled eggs!
Fall Flash Trip: Uke Jamming in Lombard
We flashed on the spur of the moment and it worked! The email went out Sep 6 and on Sep 9 about ten Club 50 members joined a dozen or so ukulele players in a large outdoor gazebo to listen to Carol King and Beatles’ hits. The best part of the jam? Three of Club 50’s members were among the performers: Paul and Carol Wissmiller and Donna Ulatowski!
Kayaking for Seventeen
August 29 found Club 50 paddling the DuPage River. New Board adviser Joan Strzelecki set up the trip.
Board of Directors elected for 2020-2021
Three Board members found their terms expiring this May–Lindy Knoepke, Ellyn Lanz and Peggy Simonsen. Peggy agreed to re-up for another three years on the Club 50 Board. New Board members Joe Strzelecki and Chuck Swinehart were elected to join the Board at our annual meeting on May 17. Congratulations, newbies!
